Overview of the phases

The “Innovation” approach (Innop) is driven by the reduction of uncertainty and the monitoring of levels of receptiveness. Crystallization is the key phase. It enables us to define the guidelines after having evaluated them, even though we began with only a vague idea.

PhaseDefinition de la phaseVisibility pointIndication of the workload
InitiationThe “Initiation” phase includes the launching and definition of the project issues. It results in a detailed plan of the task, as well as a statement highlighting the interests and responsibilities of those involved.Commitment of those involved.Several days
ExplorationThe exploratory phase enables us to analyze the context and to take existing work into consideration. It is a time for preparatory interviews, as well as research on the state of the art.Assessment of current material and state of the art.Depending on the subject to be explored (maturity, new thing, complexity…)
CrystallizationThe key moment in the Crystallization phase is the workshop, which enables us to collectively determine the guidelines to achieve the results.Guidelines approved.One to two months with intensive workshops.
SpecificationThis very brief phase consists in inferring conclusions from the Crystallization phase, the requirements and precise content that will be used to verify the results of the task.Precise specification of the results expected in the rest of the task.Drafting the document. Contractualization period.
ImplementationOn account of the reduction of uncertainty in earlier phases, the Implementation phase requires fewer exchanges and focuses on producing the deliverables.DeliveryAccording to the subject (adopt a classic estimation method).
DisseminationCreation of communication media and by-products of earlier deliverables. Communication and training actions.DeploymentDepending on the environment
ConsolidationImprovements or further additions to the deliverables, in light of the lessons learned.In general, outside of the task.Light workload in the long term.

This phased approach mirrors the movement of innovation. The phases that make up this approach differ greatly, both in their procedures and in the means that they mobilize:

  • the “Initiation” phase depends on a handful of deciders and can be limited to a few days, provided that the timeline is rigorously respected by all concerned;
  • the “Specification” phase follows on from the previous one. It takes up the conclusions in a contractual form; its duration is particularly dependent on the reactivity of the organization, more than on the workload itself;
  • the “Implementation” phase can, on the contrary, take on proportions totally unlike the previous ones; what’s more, this phase requires a more routine approach;
  • the means employed in the “Dissemination” phase must be in proportion to the population impacted by the task;
  • the “Consolidation” phase leaves the project mode behind and is more like a regular activity; the means remain modest compared to those of the Implemntation phase and the workload is spread over the long term.
